About Duus Museum
Duus Museum (Duus Safnahús) is the art and cultural center of Reykjanesbær, set in a row of old timber warehouses by the small-boat harbor in Keflavík. Under one roof it holds the Reykjanes Art Museum, the local heritage museum, the Reykjanes Geopark visitor center and a tourist information desk.
The buildings tell the town's story on their own. Peter Duus bought the Keflavík trading post in 1848, and his company built a shop in 1871 and a warehouse in 1877, the Bryggjuhúsið, right on its own pier so carts could roll goods straight inside. The Duus family sold everything in 1920, and the houses spent most of the next century processing fish.
Reykjanesbær bought the row just before 2000 and restored it for museum use, finishing with the Bryggjuhúsið, which opened to the public in May 2014. Its middle loft now holds the heritage museum's main exhibition on the region's settlement, fishing, trade and nature, while the art museum fills other rooms with changing exhibitions.
Duus Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. Admission is ISK 1,500 for adults and ISK 1,200 for seniors and students, with free entry for children under 18 and disabled visitors. Allow an hour or two to see the exhibitions.
It is about 10 minutes from Keflavík International Airport and roughly 55 minutes from Reykjavík, which makes it a good stop on an arrival or departure day. The geopark center is also a handy place to plan a drive around the Reykjanes Peninsula before heading out.
