About Faxi Waterfall Parking
Faxi, also called Vatnsleysufoss, is a broad, low waterfall on the Tungufljót river in Bláskógabyggð, South Iceland. It sits just off Route 35, the Golden Circle road between Reykholt and Geysir, about 8 km from Reykholt, 11 km from Geysir and 21 km from Gullfoss. The fall is only around 7 metres high but roughly 80 metres wide, so it reads more as a curtain of water than a single plunge.
Most Golden Circle traffic drives straight past, which is the main reason to stop. Compared with Gullfoss you will usually share the viewpoint with far fewer people, and the car park is only a short walk from the edge of the gorge. A standard visit takes 15 to 30 minutes.
On the left bank is a concrete fish ladder, a staircase of stepped pools that lets Atlantic salmon get around the drop and continue up the Tungufljót. Salmon are most likely to be seen using it in late July and August. The river is a managed salmon fishery, so fishing requires a permit bought in advance.
The site is open all year. Summer brings the longest days and the seasonal restaurant Við Faxa, which is open beside the car park. In winter the paths can be icy, and a four-wheel-drive car is advisable on Route 35 after snow; check road conditions before setting out.
There is no charge to see the waterfall, but a parking fee is collected per car on site. Recent visitor reports put it at 700 to 900 ISK, so expect a figure in that range. Free toilets and picnic tables are available, and a campsite, Faxi tjaldsvæði, lies right next to the falls.
