Hellulaug
About Hellulaug
Hellulaug is a small natural hot spring on the shore of Vatnsfjörður in the southern Westfjords, about 400 metres from the Flókalundur service centre. The rock-lined pool sits just above the sea, and from the water you look straight out over the fjord. It is free to use and one of the easiest natural hot pools in the Westfjords to reach.
The pool measures roughly 3 by 4 metres and is about 60 cm deep, enough for a small group. Water from an old spring hole at the end of the car park is piped in, keeping it at about 38°C all year. The temperature is not monitored, so test the water before getting in.
There are no changing rooms, showers, toilets or bins. Visitors change in their cars and leave clothes on the rocks, and Hótel Flókalundur rents bathrobes and slippers from its lobby. A small parking area sits right next to the pool off Route 60, though the pool cannot be seen from the road. Soap and shampoo should not be used in the water, and all rubbish should be taken away.
Flókalundur is where Route 62 meets Route 60, and it is about 6 km from Brjánslækur, where the Baldur car ferry from Stykkishólmur arrives. That makes Hellulaug an easy first or last stop for travellers taking the ferry. Dynjandi waterfall is around 18 km away in a straight line.
The spring can be visited year-round and has no opening hours. The pool is warm in winter too, but go in daylight and check road conditions with the Icelandic Road Administration before driving. In summer, evenings are the quietest time.
