About Hörgsland Campsite
Hörgsland Campsite is a family-run farm campsite on the Ring Road in South Iceland, about a 10-minute drive east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Lava fields and mossy slopes surround it on all sides, and there's very little light at night.
The farm, Hörgsland 1, has been run by Ragnar Johansen and his family since 2000. Next to the tent field there are 13 cottages that sleep up to six and a guesthouse with 14 rooms, so the Hörgsland cottages and guesthouse are a fallback when the weather turns and you'd rather have a roof. Campers get toilets, showers, Wi-Fi, walking paths and a playground, and dogs are welcome on a leash.
Camping runs from May to September. For 2026 the farm lists 2,500 ISK per adult per night, 2,000 ISK for seniors and disabled guests, and free stays for children 12 and under, with electricity at 1,500 ISK a night. There's no online booking for tent and camper pitches, so call the campsite (the number is on its official website) or just turn up.
As a base for the Síða district, Hörgsland is hard to beat. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is about 15 minutes west, and Skaftafell is roughly 50 minutes east across the Skeiðarársandur outwash plain, where strong crosswinds are common. The farm also runs guided horse tours and sells fishing permits for sea trout and salmon on nearby rivers such as the Skaftá and Hörgsá.
