About Landmannahellir Campsite
Landmannahellir is a highland hut and campsite in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, in a mountain meadow west of Landmannalaugar and north of Hekla. It serves as a base for hikers, horse riders and anglers exploring the southern highlands, and as an alternative place to stay to Landmannalaugar itself.
The tourist service centre is open from mid-June to 16 September. The campsite has room for about 50 tents, with toilets, showers and outdoor grill areas, and there are nine cottages with sleeping-bag space for around 100 people in total, each with heating, running water and cooking facilities, plus eight further cottages for rent. In 2024 camping cost 2,000 ISK per adult, with children under 12 free and showers 700 ISK; sleeping-bag places were 7,900 ISK per adult and 3,950 ISK for children aged 7 to 15. The centre is set up for horse riding tours, with a stable for 40 horses and paddocks, and guests can fish for trout in the nearby lakes. Walking routes lead into the surrounding mountains, and Landmannalaugar and Hekla can both be explored from here.
Landmannahellir can only be reached on highland mountain roads, principally F225 (Landmannaleið), which require a 4x4 vehicle and are open only in summer, usually from late June or early July. The route includes an unbridged river crossing. There are no shops nearby, so bring food and fuel with you, and check road conditions and the weather before setting out.
