Petra's Stone Collection

About Petra's Stone Collection

Petra's Stone Collection fills a house and garden in Stöðvarfjörður with rocks and minerals gathered from the mountains of East Iceland. It is the work of one woman, Petra Sveinsdóttir, who spent more than 60 years walking the slopes around the fjords and carrying home what she found.

Petra and her husband moved to the house, called Sunnuhlíð, in 1946 and planted trees around it. After he died in 1974, she opened her home and her stones to visitors, and the collection kept growing until it filled every room. Today the stones spill out into a garden of hardy Icelandic plants and imported species, including blue Himalayan poppies, with benches for a rest.

The museum sits right on the Ring Road in Stöðvarfjörður, the small village between Fáskrúðsfjörður and Breiðdalsvík, about an hour and 15 minutes from Egilsstaðir. It's an easy stop on a drive through the Eastfjords, and 45 minutes to an hour covers the house and garden at a relaxed pace.

Petra's Stone Collection opens daily from 9:00 to 17:00 between May 1 and October 15. Admission is 2,200 ISK for visitors 14 and older, and kids under 14 get in free. Kaffi Sunnó on site serves coffee from the village roastery, soup and cake.
