About Skjól Campsite
Skjól is a campsite and bistro at Kjóastaðir on Route 35 in South Iceland, right on the Golden Circle between the Geysir geothermal area, about 8 km away, and Gullfoss waterfall, about 9 km away. That position makes it one of the most convenient places to camp if you want to see Geysir and Gullfoss early in the morning or late in the evening, before or after the day-tour buses.
The campsite is a flat, grassy field for tents, campervans and motorhomes, with 17 electric hook-ups. Facilities are simple, with showers in the service house but no self-catering kitchen, so bring your own stove or eat at the Skjól Bistro, which serves simple meals, snacks and drinks. The bistro kitchen is open from 12:00 to 20:00.
Camping costs 2,000 ISK per adult (18 and over) per night, and children stay free. Showers cost 500 ISK extra, and the electricity price is not published, so ask at check-in. No reservations are needed or taken: simply arrive and check in at the bistro. The campsite is open all year, 24 hours a day.
Summer is the easiest season to camp, with long light evenings for visiting Gullfoss and Geysir. In winter the site stays open, but Route 35 can be icy and windy, so check road conditions and the weather forecast before you set out. Faxi waterfall is another short drive away.
