About Stafafell Nature Park + Camping
Stafafell í Lóni is a campsite at the farm Stafafell in the Lón district of South-East Iceland, close to the Ring Road about 25 minutes' drive east of Höfn. It sits at the foot of the Stafafellsfjöll mountains, the gateway to Lónsöræfi, an area known for its colourful mountains and varied hiking routes, and it makes a practical base for walkers heading there.
The campsite takes tents, campervans and caravans, and there are eight pitches with electricity. Facilities include toilets, showers, cooking facilities and drinking water, and the site also has a washing machine and dryer, with wifi at the reception. Horse rental is available at the farm.
Published prices are 2,000 ISK per adult per night, with children free, plus a 400 ISK accommodation tax per tent, 500 ISK for a shower and 1,000 ISK for electricity. Listings differ on the season, giving either late April to the end of September or mid-April to 1 November, so check with the campsite before visiting early or late in the year. Contact details are given on the Icelandic campsite directories, and online booking is not always active.
Several hiking trails start directly from the campsite, and a short drive inland brings you to Hvannagil, another starting point for day walks. Longer routes lead deeper into Lónsöræfi, which is part of Vatnajökull National Park; these are serious walks in remote country, so plan with good maps and a weather check. Höfn, with its shops, restaurants and swimming pool, is the nearest town.
