Kaffivagninn is the oldest operating restaurant in Iceland, with a history that stretches back to 1935. It was first started by Bjarni Kristjánsson as a small food truck at the corner of Pósthússtræti and Tryggvagata in Reykjavík, serving locals and sailors. During World War II, Bjarni continued to run the business, building a reputation for hearty meals and a welcoming atmosphere.
Today, Kaffivagninn still carries that same spirit, now in its permanent home by the harbor, where guests can enjoy the charm of Reykjavík’s working waterfront. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, offering everything from classic Icelandic dishes to fresh fish and homemade comfort food. It’s also a popular spot for coffee, with a selection of pastries and cakes that pair perfectly with a warm drink while watching the boats in the harbor.
