Nielsen Restaurant sits at the center of Egilsstaðir in East Iceland, inside a historic house that dates back to 1944. The building was originally constructed by a Danish man named Oswald Nielsen, and today it carries his name into a new chapter as a destination for thoughtful, seasonal dining. The restaurant has been carefully renovated, blending the charm of the old structure with a fresh and inviting style.
Behind Nielsen are owners Sólveig and chef Kári, whose experience includes leading the kitchen at Dill in Reykjavík, the only Icelandic restaurant to have earned a Michelin star. Here in Egilsstaðir, Kári channels that skill into a menu that changes with the seasons, using ingredients sourced from the surrounding region. Fresh fish from nearby waters, locally raised meats, wild game, garden vegetables, foraged herbs, and even rare local wasabi all make appearances, depending on what’s available at its best.
