SKÁL! is a well-loved Reykjavík restaurant that has built its reputation on creative cooking, quality drinks, and a strong focus on Icelandic ingredients. After six successful years at Hlemmur Mathöll, the city’s first food hall, SKÁL! has moved to a new home on Njálsgata, bringing its signature style to a fresh and beautiful space. Founded by friends Gísli Matt, Björn Steinar, and Gísli Grímsson, the restaurant began with a simple goal: to offer excellent food and drinks at fair prices in a setting that feels welcoming to all.
The kitchen puts local produce at the heart of the menu, using it in inventive ways to create dishes that are both flavorful and true to Iceland’s culinary roots. Alongside the food, guests can enjoy natural wines, Icelandic beers, craft cocktails, and house-brewed sparkling teas prepared by head bartender Keli. This balance of thoughtful cooking and carefully chosen drinks has earned SKÁL! a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2019, as well as multiple awards for being “The best goddamn restaurant in Reykjavík” in recent years.
Now led in partnership with restaurant manager Jon Sadler and head chef Thomas Lorentzen, SKÁL! continues to grow while keeping the friendly, approachable spirit that made it a local favorite. With its mix of award-winning food, a lively atmosphere, and a commitment to celebrating Icelandic ingredients, it’s a place where visitors and locals alike can gather to raise a glass—true to its name, which means “cheers” in Icelandic.
