About Egilsstaðir Swimming Pool
Egilsstaðir Swimming Pool is the main public pool of Egilsstaðir, the largest town in East Iceland and the usual overnight stop on the Ring Road between Mývatn and the Eastfjords. It is part of the town sports centre at Tjarnarbraut 26, a few minutes' walk from the centre, the campsite and the shops.
The outdoor pool is 25 metres long and comes with two hot tubs, a cold plunge, a children's pool, a wading pool, a steam bath and a water slide. The same building has a large sports hall and the Héraðsþrek gym. A lift gives access to the pool and hot tubs for visitors with limited mobility. It is a practical, good-value place to swim and warm up after a day at Hengifoss, Stuðlagil or on the fjord roads.
The pool is open all year. From 1 June to 31 August it opens on weekdays from 06:30 to 21:30 and at weekends from 09:00 to 17:00. From 1 September to 31 May weekday hours are 06:30 to 20:30, with the same 09:00 to 17:00 weekend opening. Early mornings are popular with local lap swimmers, and weekend afternoons with families.
Adult single entry costs around 1,200 ISK; the published figures vary slightly between sources, so check the current Múlaþing tariff. Children who live outside Múlaþing pay a reduced child rate, and pensioners and disabled visitors get a discount. Tickets are sold at the desk or through the municipality's online card system. For a more spa-like soak, the Vök Baths floating pools on Lake Urriðavatn are about 5 km north of town. The sports centre can be reached on 470 0777.
