About Grundarfjörður Camping Ground

Grundarfjörður Camping Ground is the town campsite in Grundarfjörður, a fishing town on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, about 2 hours 30 minutes' drive from Reykjavík. It sits on the upper edge of town at Borgarbraut 19, with Kirkjufell in view across the fjord.

The campsite is split into several smaller areas, and the two largest have toilets with wheelchair access and a dishwashing area. Electrical hookups are available for campervans and caravans. With Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss only 3 kilometers west, you can be at the waterfall before the tour buses at sunrise.

There are no showers on the campsite itself. Instead, campers use the town swimming pool next door, which charges its own fee and keeps its own hours, so plan your shower around them. A playground and sports field are next door too, which helps if you're traveling with children.

For 2026, adults pay 1,800 ISK per night, seniors and disabled guests 1,300 ISK, and children under 16 stay free. Electricity is another 1,300 ISK per night. Stays of three nights or more get 15% off, six nights or more get 25% off, and the site is part of the Útilegukortið camping card scheme.

Camping in Grundarfjörður is possible all year, with reduced service in winter, when the toilets stay open and the pool showers are available during pool hours. Shops, gas, cafés and the harbor are about a 10-minute walk away, and on clear winter nights the dark fjord gives you a fair shot at the northern lights.
