About Grundarfjörður Camping Ground

Grundarfjörður Camping Ground is the municipal campsite in Grundarfjörður, a fishing town on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. It sits on the upper edge of town at Borgarbraut 19, with open views over the fjord and the surrounding mountains, and Kirkjufell, the peninsula's most photographed mountain, is about 3 km to the west.

The campsite is open all year, with reduced service in winter. It is divided into sections with toilets, including accessible toilets, dishwashing areas with hot and cold water, and electrical hook-ups. Showers are not in the campsite itself: campers use the nearby town swimming pool, which charges a separate fee. There is a playground, basketball court and skate ramp close by, which makes it practical for families.

The 2026 prices are 1,800 ISK per adult per night and 1,300 ISK for seniors and disabled guests, with children under 16 free. Electricity costs 1,300 ISK per night. Stays of three nights or more get a 15% discount, and six nights or more 25%. Payment and questions go to the campsite manager, who can be reached by phone or email.

From the campsite it is a short walk into town for the supermarket, fuel, cafés and restaurants, and a few minutes' drive to Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall; arriving early or late helps you avoid the tour buses there. Grundarfjörður is also a good base for the rest of Snæfellsnes: Berserkjahraun lava field and Stykkishólmur lie to the east, and Snæfellsjökull National Park is within about 45 minutes' drive to the west. On clear winter nights the dark fjord gives a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights over Kirkjufell.
