About Heiðarbær
Heiðarbær is a small summer campsite, outdoor swimming pool and restaurant in Reykjahverfi, a geothermal farming district in North Iceland. It lies on Route 87, the road between Húsavík and Lake Mývatn, about 20 km south of Húsavík and roughly 33 km from Mývatn, which makes it a quiet alternative to staying in either.
The campsite and pool are only open in high summer, from 15 June to 31 August. The geothermally heated outdoor pool has a hot tub and a sunbathing area and is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. In 2026 pool admission costs 1,200 ISK for adults aged 16 to 66, 900 ISK for seniors and disabled visitors and 500 ISK for children aged 6 to 15, and children under 6 swim free. Food is served on site. Camping prices are not published online, so ask when you arrive or contact the operator in advance.
Having a pool and hot tub a few steps from your tent or campervan is the main attraction, especially after a day of driving or hiking. The surrounding district is dotted with hot springs and steaming ground, and the landscape is open farmland and heath.
Heiðarbær is well placed for the Diamond Circle route. Húsavík, with its whale-watching boats and the GeoSea sea baths, is 20 minutes' drive north. Goðafoss waterfall is about 29 km away, and the Mývatn area with Námaskarð, Hverfjall and the Mývatn Nature Baths is about half an hour south. Ásbyrgi canyon and the Jökulsárgljúfur part of Vatnajökull National Park are within a day trip. Fuel and groceries are in Húsavík, so fill up before you arrive.
