About Heiðarbær
Heiðarbær is a family-run campsite in Reykjahverfi, North Iceland, on Route 87 about 20 minutes' drive south of Húsavík, with a small geothermal pool right next door. Few campsites in the north let you walk from your tent to a hot tub.
Heiðarbær camping is summer only, open from June 15 to August 31. The field is flat and open, and the kitchen serves dinner from 6 to 8:30 p.m., which saves you cooking after a long drive. Camping prices aren't posted online, so ask on arrival or call ahead, and note that the pool charges its own entry fee.
Location is the real selling point. Húsavík and its whale-watching boats are to the north, the GeoSea sea baths sit on the cliffs above town, and the Mývatn area is roughly 40 minutes south along Route 87. That puts the Heiðarbær campsite in the middle of the Diamond Circle, quieter than the town campsites at either end.
Plan on at least two nights if you want both a whale trip and a day around Mývatn. Fill up with gas and groceries in Húsavík on the way in, because the nearest store is back in town.
