Hólaskjól - Highland Center

Absolutely stunning camping for those who explore the surroundings and want to stay a bit longer and explore. The hosts are amazingly friendly and very helpful. Hot showers, toilets and small shop with all-you-need for camping stuff plus some local lovely products. No need to book the camping space in edvsnce, however if you want to stay in the cabin or the mountain shelter (multi-persons rooms) it's highly advisable to book before you go there. A huge bonus is the stunning waterfall just behind the camp site. A lot of hiking trails around. There is a ranger's hut as well so you can get news about the weather and roads in the area.

A lovely peaceful camping site near the Eldgja canyon in the Icelandic highlands. We stayed here 1 night on the way back from Landmannalaugavegur. The reception is in a cute little hut which also sells local handmade souvenirs. The host was very friendly and helpful. There were no kitchen facilities available and you do have to pay 600 ISK extra for the showers. There were only 2 toilets. If you needed to use lodgings you need to book in advance as they were fully booked. There is a lovely waterfall just behind the camp grounds about a 10 minute walk. We had been trying to find it on Google maps prior to arriving but Google maps takes you to the wrong place and it’s actually just behind the campsite. The hostess told us there might be northern lights that night so we stayed up and saw them which was wonderful as it was still August. We wouldn’t have known to look if she hadn’t told us.

We had to stop there even though it wasn’t planned because it was heavily raining and the F208 road was flooded. This is a very nice place, be careful though as you will very much likely need a four-wheel-drive to reach that place. There is only one shower, but it provides hot water and it is clean. The owner was very nice and helpful to us, especially regarding the weather condition. There is a waterfall nearby.
