Laugarás Lagoon

About Laugarás Lagoon

Laugarás Lagoon is a geothermal lagoon in the village of Laugarás on the banks of the Hvítá river, on the Golden Circle route in South Iceland. It opened on 15 October 2025 and covers about 1,000 square metres. The historic church site of Skálholt is next door.

The lagoon is built on two levels joined by a waterfall about 6.6 metres long, a first for an Icelandic lagoon. There is also a grotto, a forest pool, an infinity edge facing the river, two swim-up bars, a dry sauna, a steam bath and a cold pool. The water is 38–40°C. On site, Ylja restaurant is run by chef Gísli Matthías Auðunsson, and there is a wheelchair lift and a private changing room.

Laugarás is at Skálholtsvegur 1, about 94 km or roughly an hour and a half by car from Reykjavík, and about 40 minutes from Selfoss. Flúðir and the Secret Lagoon are across the Hvítá, about 25 minutes by road. Public buses 72 and 73 serve Laugarás, but not frequently, so most visitors drive or come on a tour.

Prices change by date and time. Basic Birki entry is 6,900–9,900 ISK, Lerki (with towel and a drink) from 9,400 ISK, and Ösp, which adds a two-course lunch at Ylja, from 15,900 ISK. Children aged 5–15 are welcome with an adult, and children under 5 are not allowed in the lagoon. Booking is strongly recommended, and there is no luggage storage.

From 15 August to 1 November the lagoon is open daily 10:00–21:00 (last entry 19:30), and from 2 November to 30 April daily 10:00–20:30 (last entry 19:00). Summer hours had not been published at the time of writing, so check before a May–August visit.
