About Reykjavík Park and Zoo

The Reykjavík Park and Zoo is a family park and small zoo in the Laugardalur valley, a few kilometers east of downtown Reykjavík. Called Fjölskyldu- og húsdýragarðurinn in Icelandic, it pairs a barn full of Icelandic farm animals with seals, Arctic foxes, play areas and summer rides, and it keeps small children busy for hours.

The zoo half focuses on Icelandic animals, from farmyard regulars like goats to seals and Arctic foxes, with a few exotic species from elsewhere. A daily schedule of feeding and animal activities is posted at the entrance, and plenty of the farm animals can be petted. On the family park side you'll find play areas, rides and a cafeteria that's open every day.

The Reykjavík zoo is open every day of the year, 10:00 to 18:00 from June 1 to August 31 and 10:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year. Summer is the time to come with kids, because the staffed rides run daily from June 1 to August 18 and otherwise only on weekends in spring and fall, weather permitting. The animals are out year-round, so a winter visit still works if you just want the zoo side.

Admission is 2,800 ISK for adults and 1,600 ISK for children aged 6 to 17, while children 5 and under and people with disabilities enter free. Pets aren't allowed except on set days for dogs, and bikes, scooters and skateboards stay outside the gates. Allow two to three hours.

The park is at Múlavegur 2, with free parking shared with the Skautahöllin ice rink, and buses 2, 5, 15 and 17 stop at Laugardalshöll nearby. Next door is the Botanic Garden, and Laugardalslaug, the city's largest pool, is a short walk away. Between them, it's easy to fill a whole family day without getting back in the car.
