Selárdalur Swimming Pool, known locally as Selárlaug or Selárdalslaug, is an outdoor geothermal pool on the bank of the Selá river in Selárdalur valley, in the Vopnafjörður district of Northeast Iceland. It lies 12 km from Vopnafjörður village and 3.5 km off Route 85 on the road towards Bakkafjörður, reached by a short side road into the valley.
The pool sits low in a small river ravine, so you swim with the sound of the Selá, one of Iceland's best-known salmon rivers, running past. Beside the main pool are a spacious hot tub, a cold tub and a children's pool, plus a sun deck and a picnic area. Access for people with reduced mobility is described as good. It is a small, quiet rural pool, and outside the school swimming sessions in spring and autumn you will often have it nearly to yourself.
Summer is the best time to come, when long opening hours let you swim in the evening light. From 1 June to 31 August the pool opens on weekdays from 10:00 to 22:00 and at weekends from 10:00 to 18:00. From 1 September to 31 May it opens on weekdays from 14:00 to 19:00 and at weekends from midday, with a closing time of 16:00 or 18:00 depending on the source, so call ahead for a winter weekend visit.
The entry price is not shown on the pool's own page, so check the Vopnafjörður municipal tariff or ask on arrival; free entry for children and pensioners applies only to local residents. The pool can be reached on 473 1499. There is no village at the pool, so bring food for the picnic area and fuel up in Vopnafjörður.
