Súgandisey Island
About Súgandisey Island
Súgandisey is a small basalt island at the mouth of the harbor in Stykkishólmur, the main town on the north side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. A causeway joins it to the mainland, so you can walk from the harbor to the small red lighthouse on its summit in a few minutes.
The island shelters the harbor from the open water of Breiðafjörður, and its dark cliffs are made of stacked basalt columns. From the top, you look out over a scatter of low islands in the bay, the colored roofs of Stykkishólmur behind you, and on clear days the mountains of the Westfjords across the water.
To get to Súgandisey, drive to the harbor in Stykkishólmur and park near the ferry terminal at the foot of the causeway. Steps and a gravel path lead up the slope to the lighthouse and a viewpoint, and the climb is short and easy for most people. Stykkishólmur is about three hours by car from Reykjavík.
Summer evenings are the best time to visit Súgandisey, when the sun stays low over Breiðafjörður for hours. It is open all year with no fee, but the top is fully exposed, so hold on to hats and children when the wind picks up. Allow 30 minutes to an hour, and pair it with a walk through the old harbor streets below.
