Tjaldsvæðið Kleifar is a small summer campsite beside Stjórnarfoss waterfall on Geirlandsvegur, about 2.5 kilometers from Kirkjubæjarklaustur in South Iceland. Also known as Kleifar-Mörk, the grassy site sits at the foot of the hills, and Stjórnarfoss, a wide, low waterfall on the Stjórn river, drops right beside the tents.
Few campsites in the south let you fall asleep to a waterfall, and that is the reason to choose Kleifar over the serviced site in the village. On a warm summer day, some people swim in the pool below the falls.
Keep expectations simple. Kleifar campsite has two toilets, cold running water, and benches and tables, with a soccer field across the road. There are no showers or electric hook-ups, so it suits tent campers and self-sufficient campervans best.
The season is short, running from June 1 to September 1. Prices are not published, so confirm the rate on arrival. For a hot shower and a swim, the Kirkjubæjarklaustur pool is a few minutes' drive away, and the village also has a grocery store, a gas station and restaurants.
Kleifar camping works well as a base for this stretch of the Ring Road, about three and a half hours east of Reykjavík. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is roughly 15 minutes west, while the Kirkjugólf basalt floor and the Systrafoss trail are in the village itself. Skaftafell is about an hour east, an easy drive for the next morning.
Kleifar is easy to mix up with Kleifarvatn, the lake on the Reykjanes peninsula near Reykjavík. The two have no connection, so set your GPS to Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
