Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Reykjavík to Hrafntinnusker

    Duration: 5-6 hours

    Travel from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar by bus, taking about 4 hours. Enjoy the landscapes and a geothermal hot spring before starting a 12 km hike through the Laugahraun lava field, formed by the Brennisteinsalda volcanic eruption. Ascend 470 m past vibrant hot springs and multicolored rhyolite mountains, culminating in the obsidian desert. Stay overnight in the Hrafntinnusker hut, where amenities are powered by solar energy.

  2. Day 2: Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn Lake

    Duration: 6 hours

    Depart from Hrafntinnusker, traversing the Reykjafjöll mountains and descending 490 m over 12 km into the Jökultungur area, offering a panoramic view of the Fjallbak area and Lake Álftavatn. The journey features diverse terrains, from dark palagonite mountains to greener, more fertile landscapes. The day ends at the Álftavatn hut beside the picturesque lake.

  3. Day 3: Álftavatn to Emstrur

    Duration: 7-8 hours

    Trek 16 km from Lake Álftavatn to Emstrur, with a minimal descent of 40 m. The route offers two trails depending on weather conditions; the scenic one runs along the lake and through beautiful valleys before meeting the Emstrur trail. Cross several rivers and navigate through the stark Mælifellssandur black sand desert, ending the day with views of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers before reaching the Emstrur hut.

  4. Day 4: Emstrur to Thórsmörk

    Duration: 7-8 hours

    Complete the trek with a 15 km hike from Emstrur to Thórsmörk, descending 300 m. This final stretch includes varied landscapes, from glacier views to deep valleys and a dense birch forest in Langidalur, Thórsmörk, where the trail concludes. Celebrate completing one of the world's most scenic hikes in Thórsmörk. Optional extended stay in Thórsmörk or a return to Reykjavík in the evening.
