Where can you go snowmobiling in Iceland?
Snowmobiling in Iceland happens on the glaciers, not in the lowlands, because reliable snow cover at sea level is not guaranteed. Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest ice cap, is the most used and is reachable from the Golden Circle. Mýrdalsjökull, above the volcano Katla, is the South Coast option. Both hold snow year-round, so tours run in every season.
Do you need a licence to drive a snowmobile?
Yes, a valid driving licence is required to drive, and operators check it before you set off. Passengers do not need one, and sharing a machine costs less than taking one each. Minimum age to drive is typically 18.
What is included?
Operators supply the snowmobile, a full thermal overall, helmet, balaclava and gloves — you genuinely do not need your own cold-weather gear beyond warm layers underneath. Reaching the glacier itself requires a modified super-jeep or snowcat, which is usually included in the tour price or sold as a transfer.
How long and how much?
Our snowmobile tours run about 4 hours in total, of which roughly 1 hour is on the machine, and cost from ISK 39,000 to ISK 55,000. The rest of the time is the transfer up to the glacier and kitting out. Snowmobiling is frequently sold combined with a Golden Circle day, since Langjökull sits just beyond it.

Can you snowmobile in summer?
Yes. Tours run on glaciers that hold snow year-round, so summer snowmobiling is normal in Iceland — you can do it in July in a T-shirt underneath the overalls.
How long are you actually on the snowmobile?
Usually about 1 hour of riding within a 4-hour tour. The remainder is the super-jeep transfer up to the glacier, briefing and kitting out.
What should I wear?
Warm layers and sturdy shoes. Overalls, helmet, balaclava and gloves are provided, so you do not need specialist outerwear of your own.
Is snowmobiling difficult?
No. The machines are automatic and easy to control, guides lead in single file at a moderate pace, and no experience is required.
What is the minimum age?
Typically 18 to drive. Children can usually ride as passengers from around age 6–8 depending on the operator.
Can you combine snowmobiling with the Golden Circle?
Yes, and it is the most common way to buy it. Langjökull sits just beyond the Golden Circle loop, so operators run a combined day.
Is it cancelled in bad weather?
Sometimes. Glacier-top wind and visibility decide it, and safety margins are tight up there. Cancelled tours are refunded or rebooked.
