Borgarnes Camping Ground, run under the name Granastaðir Campsite, is the town campsite of Borgarnes in West Iceland, at Granastaðir by Borgarbraut, just off Route 1. Borgarnes sits on a narrow peninsula in Borgarfjörður about an hour's drive north of Reykjavík through the Hvalfjörður tunnel, and it is the natural first overnight stop for anyone heading to Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords or north along the Ring Road. The site looks out over the fjord towards the mountains on the far shore.
Facilities include toilets, showers included in the price, electricity hook-ups, free Wi-Fi, barbecue grills, dishwashing stations and a waste disposal point, with a playground nearby. Payment is collected on site, and groups or longer stays can be arranged in advance by email or through the contact form on the campsite's website. The Camping Card is not accepted here.
The campsite is open from mid-May to mid-September. Rates per night are ISK 2,000 per adult aged 14 to 66 and ISK 1,500 for seniors, with children up to 13 free, plus a pitch fee of ISK 400 per tent or vehicle and ISK 1,500 for electricity. Prices can change during the season, so check before you arrive.
The town has supermarkets, fuel stations, restaurants and a geothermal swimming pool at the sports centre, all within a short drive or walk. The Settlement Centre in the old town tells the story of the first settlers and of Egill Skallagrímsson, the saga hero who grew up in the area. Beyond town, Deildartunguhver hot spring, the Krauma baths, the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and the historic site of Reykholt lie inland in Borgarfjörður, within an hour's drive, and the south coast of Snæfellsnes begins about an hour to the north-west.
