About Búðardalur
Búðardalur campsite is the village campsite in Búðardalur, the main settlement of the Dalir district on Hvammsfjörður in West Iceland. It sits on Vesturbraut in the middle of the village, in a grove of trees that takes the edge off the wind, and the village shop is a short walk away.
Búðardalur is about 154 kilometers from Reykjavík, roughly two hours by car. That puts it between Snæfellsnes, Borgarfjörður and the road north into the Westfjords, which is why camping in Búðardalur works so well as a one-night stop at the end of a long driving day.
The service building has hot and cold water, showers and a washing area. Campervans and caravans can plug into electricity hook-ups, and there is a disposal point for chemical toilets. Dalahestar, the local horse rental, runs the site, so a ride in the valley can start right where you pitched your tent.
The Búðardalur campsite is open from May 1 to September 30 and accepts the Camping Card. Nightly rates for 2026 are not posted, so call the campsite on 767 2100 to check current prices before you arrive.
In the evening, walk over to Vínlandssetur, which has a café and an exhibition on the Viking voyages to North America, or soak in the hot tubs at the village sports center pool. Bring warm layers even in July, since the weather on Hvammsfjörður turns quickly.
