Sælingsdalslaug

About Sælingsdalslaug

Sælingsdalslaug is the geothermal swimming pool at Laugar in Sælingsdalur, a small settlement in the Dalir district of West Iceland. It sits about 1 km off Route 60, roughly 15 km north of Búðardalur, and is run together with Dalahótel, the hotel and campsite on the same site. Reception for the campsite is in the pool lobby.

The facilities are a 25-metre outdoor pool, a children's pool, hot tubs and a steam bath. The water is heated by the hot springs that gave Laugar ("baths") its name. It is a practical stop for washing and warming up on the long drive between Borgarnes, Snæfellsnes and the Westfjords, and on a Dalir saga-sites itinerary.

Laugar has a place in the sagas: it was the home of Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir, the central figure of Laxdæla saga, and a small reconstructed hot pool named Guðrúnarlaug lies close to the hotel. Combining a swim with a look at the saga sites of Dalir makes a worthwhile half day.

The pool is listed as open all year, but the operator does not publish current opening hours or admission prices online. Hours have varied since the municipality handed the pool to private operators in 2022, so phone Dalahótel before a special trip, especially outside summer. Camping at Laugar costs 2,000 ISK per adult, with children 16 and under free. As at every Icelandic pool, you must shower without a swimsuit before entering the water.
