About Flateyri Swimming Pool

Flateyri Swimming Pool is the public pool of Flateyri, a small village on a sand spit in Önundarfjörður in the Westfjords, run by Ísafjarðarbær municipality. It is a local pool rather than a tourist attraction, which is exactly its appeal: a warm soak with views across the fjord, usually with only a handful of villagers for company.

The facilities are compact. There is a 16-metre pool, a massage hot tub, outdoor hot basins and an outdoor sauna, and the building also houses a sports hall and gym. There are no private changing cubicles, so expect shared changing rooms.

Opening hours change markedly between seasons. The summer timetable, from 2 June, runs Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and at weekends 10:00–17:00. From 23 August the winter timetable applies: closed on Mondays and Fridays, open Tuesday to Thursday 14:00–20:00 and Saturday and Sunday 11:00–17:00. Holiday closures and temporary changes are posted on the pool's Facebook page.

A single adult ticket costs 1,420 ISK, the same at all four Ísafjarðarbær pools. Under-18s swim free, and seniors aged 67 and over and disabled visitors get 50% off. An annual pass covers the municipality's pools and the pool in Bolungarvík. Tickets and cards can also be bought online through the municipality's card system.

Flateyri is about 20 minutes' drive from Ísafjörður through the Vestfjarðagöng tunnel, and within about half an hour of Suðureyri and Þingeyri, each of which also has a municipal pool. A swim here fits well into a day exploring Önundarfjörður, including the white-sand beach at Holt across the fjord. Showering without a swimsuit is required before entering.
