Grenivíkurlaug
About Grenivíkurlaug
Grenivíkurlaug is the village pool of Grenivík, a small fishing community on the eastern shore of Eyjafjörður, about 40 km north of Akureyri. It is run by Grýtubakkahreppur municipality and is best known for its view: from the water you look out over the village, the mountain Kaldbakur and the length of the fjord.
The outdoor pool, built in 1990, measures 8 by 16.67 metres. A sports centre added in 2005 has the reception, changing rooms, a sauna and a gym. In December 2020 a new poolside area opened with a roomy 39°C hot tub, a 30 cm deep wading pool at 37°C for small children and a cold tub. Accessibility was improved in 2022 with powered doors, better showers and a portable pool lift.
Opening hours are short and change through the year, so plan around them. The autumn timetable that followed the August 2026 maintenance closure is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 16:00–19:00, Thursday 17:00–21:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:00–16:00. Updates are posted on the pool's Facebook page.
The 2026 tariff is 1,250 ISK for adults (16 and over), 400 ISK for children and free for children below school age. Seniors and disabled visitors get 50% off the adult price, and a ten-visit adult card costs 6,250 ISK.
Grenivík makes a quiet alternative to the busy Akureyri pool and pairs well with a visit to the Laufás turf farm on the way, a hike on Kaldbakur or the drive along Látraströnd. The village campsite is right next to the pool. Showering without a swimsuit before swimming is required.
