About Heydalur
Heydalur is a farm, hotel and campsite at the head of Mjóifjörður, one of the fjords off Ísafjarðardjúp in the Westfjords. Guests have three places to bathe: an indoor pool inside a tropical greenhouse, a hot pot beside the greenhouse, and a natural hot spring across the river. It makes a good overnight stop on the long drive between Hólmavík and Ísafjörður.
The greenhouse pool is kept at 23–28°C and is open around the clock to hotel guests. The hot pot next to it uses water pumped from the ground and is about 40°C. The natural spring across the river, a few minutes' walk from the buildings, is also about 40°C and has been known since the 12th century; by tradition it was blessed by Bishop Guðmundur the Good.
Heydalur lies 12 km off Road 61. Ísafjörður is about 130 km away, Hólmavík roughly 110–120 km, and Reykjavík about 320 km. The pools and springs are used at your own risk, and young children must be supervised by a parent.
The pool and natural spring are free for hotel and camping guests. The campsite's 2026 rates are 2,000 ISK per adult and 500 ISK for ages 7–15, plus 400 ISK tax per unit. Non-guests have been allowed to bathe for a fee, but the price is not published, so ask at reception (+354 456 4824) before you arrive.
The hotel is open all year and advertises northern lights viewing from mid-September to mid-April, while the campsite is open from 1 June to the end of October. In winter, check road conditions with the Icelandic Road Administration before driving the access road.
