Iceland Hot Springs

Hvammsvík

About Hvammsvík

Hvammsvík Hot Springs is a nature resort on the shore of Hvalfjörður, about 45 minutes' drive from Reykjavík. It has eight geothermal pools along the beach, fed by the estate's own geothermal well, and some of them are affected by the tide. It is one of the closest natural-style bathing sites to the capital and an easy half-day trip.

Pool temperatures range from about 35°C in the tidal pool to 39–42°C in the Old Hot Spring. The tidal pool is covered by the sea at high tide and exposed at low tide, and the temperature of the beach pools changes with the tide too. Bathers can also swim in the fjord, which is around 10°C. There is a sauna, a steam room, a cold plunge, a swim-up bar and a bistro, and admission includes scheduled events such as guided sea swims and breathing sessions.

From Reykjavík, take Route 1 north and turn onto Route 47 before the Hvalfjörður tunnel, then follow the fjord for about 20 km. The drive is roughly 52–56 km. Akranes is 38 km away and Þingvellir 47 km, and Glymur, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, is further along the same fjord.

Prices change by time slot and package. In September 2026 Natural entry (open changing area) was 5,900–9,900 ISK, Classic (private shower booths and lockers) 7,900–11,900 ISK, and Comfort (private changing, towel, shoes and a drink) 11,100–15,100 ISK. The minimum age is 10, visitors aged 10–18 must be with an adult, and there are no child or senior discounts. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, since walk-ins are only admitted if there is space. Outside food and drink are not allowed.

From late August to the end of May the baths open 10:30–20:30, with last entry at 19:00. Summer hours are longer but are listed differently on the operator's pages, so check the booking site before a June–August visit. Winter evenings are the best chance of seeing northern lights from the water.
