About Illugastaðir Campsite
Illugastaðir Campsite is a small farm campsite on the Vatnsnes peninsula in Húnaþing vestra, Northwest Iceland, reached along Route 711. It sits beside one of the best-known seal-watching spots in the country: seals are present at Illugastaðir most days of the year, resting on the rocks or swimming close to the shore. The grounds are spacious and open, with wide views in every direction and the midnight sun in early summer.
A walking trail leads from the farm down to the seashore and the seal-watching area, and there is a shelter for watching in bad weather. Keep to the path and keep your distance so the seals are not disturbed. Many birds breed here too, including a large colony of Arctic terns and nesting eider ducks.
Because of the nesting birds, the whole site, including the campsite and the seal-watching area, is closed to all visitors from 1 May to 20 June every year. Outside that period the campsite is generally open all year.
Facilities are basic: two heated toilets, two sinks with hot and cold water, electricity and outdoor tables. There are no showers listed. Dogs are allowed. According to the Parka booking listing, adults pay 1,800 ISK per night in summer and 1,200 ISK in winter, plus a 400 ISK accommodation tax; children under 16 stay free and electricity costs 1,000 ISK per night. Hvammstangi, towards the southern end of the peninsula, is the nearest town for shops, fuel and a swimming pool.
