Íþróttamiðstöðin Varmalandi

About Íþróttamiðstöðin Varmalandi

Íþróttamiðstöðin Varmalandi is the sports centre and outdoor swimming pool at Varmaland, a small geothermal settlement in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland. It is run by the municipality of Borgarbyggð and lies a few kilometres off the Ring Road north of Borgarnes, in the farming district of Stafholtstungur.

The pool is a 25 by 12.5 metre outdoor pool with a hot tub and a sunbathing area. The centre also has a sauna, a refurbished gym and a sports hall that can be rented. It is a quiet, local pool rather than a spa, and in summer it serves holiday-home owners, campers at the Varmaland campsite and travellers who want a swim between Reykjavík and the north.

The pool is open in summer only and closes for the winter. In recent seasons it has opened daily from 14:00 to 20:00 from early June until mid-August; the national pool directory lists 8 June to 18 August. Exact dates change from year to year and are announced by Borgarbyggð, so check before planning a visit in early June or late August. Large groups can ask to have the facility opened outside normal hours.

The 2026 tariff lists single entry at 1,600 ISK for adults and for seniors and disabled visitors, 400 ISK for children aged 11–15 and free entry for children up to 10. As in all Icelandic pools, shower without a swimsuit before swimming.

Varmaland is a good base for exploring upper Borgarfjörður. Deildartunguhver, Europe's highest-flow hot spring, is about 9 km away, the Kleppjárnsreykir pool is about 10 km away, and Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls are roughly half an hour's drive east.
