A quiet and lesser-known waterfall not far from Þingvellir. It’s easy to miss if you just follow the main road, but definitely worth a short detour. Þórufoss is tall, elegant, and beautifully set in a peaceful valley with almost no crowds — when we visited, we had the whole place to ourselves. The waterfall is also known for appearing in Game of Thrones (season 4, when the dragon attacks the goats), which makes it a fun stop for fans of the series. Parking is just a minute’s walk from the viewpoint, so it’s an easy and rewarding stop on a Golden Circle route.
Lovely waterfall just below the level of the road. Small parking area for ~ a dozen cars. It’s was full at noon on a Sunday when we visited, but visits are quick. There is no trail - you just meander East over spongy moss, gravel, and rocks to see the falls - the path is mostly flat, but the walk would be difficult for anyone with mobility challenges. Lovely quick stop!
Was a cool stop in the morning and easy to get up close to the base of the falls. Plenty of parking. The start of the trail down is not clear at all. If you just entered the parking lot, start the trail off to the right side by crossing the small dip and then walking down along the hillside down to the river.
