About Sólbrekka tjaldsvæði

Sólbrekka tjaldsvæði is the campsite at the farm Brekka in Mjóifjörður, a remote inlet in the East Fjords of Iceland. It's the one place to pitch a tent in the fjord, on the lawn in front of a small family-run guesthouse.

Mjóifjörður is reached by a single gravel road, and only a handful of people live here year-round. That quiet is the reason to come, along with the waterfalls and the long drive out to the lighthouse at the end of the road.

The Sólbrekka campsite is simple, with electricity hookups for campervans and RVs on the lawn and the guesthouse right behind it. The same hosts rent bicycles by the day, sell a hiking map for the marked trails around the fjord, and run a summer café from June 10 to August 20. If you would rather sleep indoors, the guesthouse has five rooms and two cottages sit just below the house.

Camping runs from June 1 to September 30, but the road sets the real schedule. Route 953 climbs from the Egilsstaðir side over the Mjóafjarðarheiði pass, about 40 km of mostly gravel with a steep descent into the fjord, and it is closed in winter. Check the official road-conditions map before you set off, and give yourself about an hour for the drive.

Plan on at least one night, since the drive in is too slow for a quick look. On the way down from the pass, Klifbrekkufossar drops in tiers beside the road, and past Sólbrekka the road continues along the fjord to the Dalatangi lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula.

There is no shop or gas station in Mjóifjörður. Fill up and buy groceries in Egilsstaðir first.
