Fortunately, everyone on board survived, but the plane was left behind and has since become an iconic sight. The crash site is located on Iceland's southern coast, not far from the town of Vik. To visit the wreck, you must walk around 4 kilometers from the nearest parking area, as vehicles are not allowed to drive directly to the site. The walk takes about an hour each way, and you should be prepared for windy and cold weather. The stark contrast between the metal wreckage and the surrounding black sand creates an eerie yet captivating scene. Many photographers and tourists visit to capture its unique beauty. I visited the Sólheimasandur plane wreck, and honestly, I didn’t enjoy it. There were way too many people climbing all over the wreck, even on the roof, behaving like animals just to get the “perfect” photo. On top of that, the sky was full of buzzing drones, which really ruined the atmosphere. You also need to consider that it’s a 3.5 km walk each way across flat, boring and dusty terrain to even get there.
It’s a plain wreck if you are interested. The spot is cool it has ocean on one side and hills on the other . Also the black pebbled surface does create a dramatic feeling for sure . There is a parking structure and you can oak and hike to the spot . The round hike could be of 1.5 hours but it is windy and could be cold if you are up for it . Or you can take the shuttle like we did . I have added the shuttle rate and time details in the photos
Fantastic and famous eerie plane wreck site. Try to arrive before the first shuttle bus at 10.10am to avoid the tourist masses. One walk there takes 45min. Prepare rations and check the weather. It is all flat so there is no way to hide from the weather.
