Overview
A one-hour guided ATV ride in Vestmannaeyjar, circling the Eldfell crater and the island's coast on automatic two-seat machines.
The route runs through the lava and into the crater itself, then along the coast to Prestvík, where the fishing vessel Pelagus ran aground, and past the shore where Guðlaugur Friðþórsson came to land after swimming 5-6 km from the wreck of Hellisey VE 503. Each rider is given a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves and a helmet fitted with a headset, so the guide can talk through each stop.
The machines are automatic and no riding experience is needed, but every driver must hold a driving licence and passengers must be at least 6 years old. The tour meets in Vestmannaeyjar, not in Reykjavík.
