About Sundlaugin Laugaskarði
Sundlaugin Laugaskarði is the public swimming pool of Hveragerði, the geothermal town about 45 km east of Reykjavík on Route 1. It lies at Laugaskarð on the edge of town, below the steaming hillside, and is run by Hveragerði municipality.
The pool has a long history. Local volunteers built it and it opened in 1938; for years it was the largest pool in Iceland and was used by the national swimming team before Laugardalslaug opened in Reykjavík. The main pool is 50 metres long and 12 metres wide, heated with geothermal water, and there is a warm shallow children's pool, a hot tub and a natural steam bath fed by steam from the ground.
For visitors, it pairs naturally with the Reykjadalur hot river hike, which starts a few kilometres north of town: a swim here gives you proper showers and changing rooms before or after the walk. It is also a sensible first or last stop on a Golden Circle or South Coast drive, since Hveragerði sits on the main road.
Summer hours (15 May–14 September) are 06:45–21:30 on weekdays and 09:00–19:00 at weekends. In winter (15 September–14 May) the pool opens 06:45–20:30 on weekdays and 10:00–17:30 at weekends. The 2026 price for a single adult ticket is 1,500 ISK and a child ticket is 440 ISK; a single ticket stays valid for a year after purchase. Swimsuit and towel hire together cost 2,750 ISK, and 10-visit, 30-visit, six-month and annual cards are also sold.
