About Þelamerkurlaug
Þelamerkurlaug, now also called Jónasarlaug, is the outdoor pool at Þelamörk in Hörgársveit, North Iceland, next to the Þelamerkurskóli school and sports hall. It sits right beside the Ring Road about 10 km north-west of Akureyri, on the way towards Öxnadalur and the pass to Skagafjörður. The newer name honours the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson, who was born in Öxnadalur a short drive up the valley.
The main pool is kept warm, at 33–35°C, noticeably warmer than most lap pools in Iceland. There are two hot tubs, one at 38–40°C and one at 40–42°C, a steam bath at around 44–46°C, a waterslide with its own landing pool and a wading pool that is open in the warmer months.
For travellers, it makes a convenient first or last stop on the Ring Road when arriving in or leaving the Akureyri area from the west, and the Lónsá campsite and Akureyri's two town pools are all within about 10 km.
Summer hours (6 June to 23 August) are 11:00–22:00 Sunday to Thursday and 11:00–18:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. In winter (24 August to 5 June) it opens 16:00–22:30 Monday to Thursday, is closed on Fridays, and opens 11:00–18:00 on Saturdays and 11:00–22:30 on Sundays.
The 2026 tariff lists adult entry (16 and over) at 1,300 ISK, 320 ISK for children of primary-school age and 490 ISK for pensioners. A ten-visit adult card costs 7,400 ISK. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a swimmer aged at least 15.
