About Tjaldsvæði Bolungarvíkur

Tjaldsvæði Bolungarvíkur is the municipal campsite in Bolungarvík, a fishing town of around a thousand people at the mouth of Ísafjarðardjúp in the Westfjords. It is at Höfðastígur 1, next to the town swimming pool, and is about 15 km, or 15 minutes by car, from Ísafjörður through the Bolungarvík tunnel.

The campsite is run by the swimming pool, whose staff handle check-in and questions. Facilities include toilets and washrooms, an indoor area with a snack bar and cooking facilities, a washing machine and dryer, outdoor grills, clotheslines and electrical hook-ups. Campers get a 25% discount at the pool next door.

Prices are set per unit rather than per person: 4,500 ISK for a campervan, motorhome or caravan and 2,500 ISK for a tent. Electricity and laundry cost 1,700 ISK each, and showers cost 750 ISK. If you pay for three consecutive nights, the fourth night is free. The municipality does not state fixed opening dates, so contact the pool before arriving outside the summer months.

The campsite is a good base for the northern Westfjords. In town, the Ósvör Maritime Museum shows a reconstructed fishing station with turf huts and a traditional rowing boat, and there is a natural history museum, frisbee golf and a golf course within walking distance. Above the town, Bolafjall mountain has a viewing platform over Ísafjarðardjúp and towards Hornstrandir, reached by a steep gravel road that is only open in summer. Ísafjörður, with its shops, restaurants and boat trips to Hornstrandir, is a short drive away.
