About Tjaldsvæðið í Svínafelli
Svínafell camping is the farm campsite at Svínafell in Öræfi, Southeast Iceland, directly below the ice of Vatnajökull and about 7 kilometers east of Skaftafell along the Ring Road. Svínafell Tourist Service runs Tjaldsvæðið í Svínafelli, with room for tents, campervans and caravans plus a handful of huts.
It is the quieter alternative to the big national park campground at Skaftafell, close enough that the trailheads are a few minutes away. Everything happens in Skáli, the service building, which has shared toilets and showers, small electric stoves, a refrigerator, hot water for washing up and tables for about 80 people.
Pots and utensils are not provided, so bring your own. There is also no electricity for campervans or caravans, which matters if you rely on a hook-up.
The campsite, huts and Skáli are open from May 1 to September 30. For 2026, camping costs 2,300 ISK per person plus taxes, and children up to 13 stay free. Pitches cannot be reserved, so in July and August aim to arrive by late afternoon.
Plan on two nights if you want to walk in Skaftafell, where the trail to Svartifoss starts. The Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue is about 3 kilometers from the farm, and the Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoons are within an hour's drive east. Reykjavík is roughly four and a half hours away by car.
