Matkráin is a charming restaurant in Hveragerði, created by Guðmundur and Jakob, two well-known restaurateurs who first made their mark with the popular Jómfrúin in 1996. While Matkráin has its own style and character, it carries the same spirit of quality and hospitality that made their earlier venture so loved.

The restaurant is especially known for its smurbrauð, a Danish-style open-faced sandwich served in one generous size. Each one is carefully prepared with fresh, flavorful toppings, and while a single serving is perfect for a light bite, many guests go for a double to truly satisfy their appetite.

To pair with the food, Matkráin serves a thoughtful selection of drinks, including classic Aalborg shots and unique house-made blends infused with herbs and berries gathered from the owners’ own gardens. The combination of these delicious toasts, refreshing ales, and signature shots makes for a dining experience that is both simple and memorable, with a warm, local touch that reflects the heart of Hveragerði.
