Drysuit Snorkeling in Silfra with Underwater Photos

  • 2½–4½ hours
  • Meet on location or Reykjavík pick-up
  • Free underwater photos
  • Minimum age 12
  • Operated by Adventure Vikings

Overview

Silfra, in Þingvellir National Park about 50 km from Reykjavík, is rated among the top dive sites in the world: a freshwater fissure some 60 metres deep between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, filled with filtered glacier water so clear that snorkeling it feels like flying.

In this classic version of the tour you snorkel in a drysuit. Layers of insulating fabric keep you completely dry and warm while you float over the fissure, making it the comfortable choice if you would rather take in the canyon at your own pace than brave the 2–4°C water in neoprene. If you want to duck-dive below the surface instead, have a look at our wetsuit version of this tour.

No diving licence or previous experience is needed. Your guide briefs you on shore, fits all the gear, and takes free underwater photos of you between the plates — and hot chocolate is waiting when you come out of the water.

Book it as a self-drive tour and meet your guide at Silfra, or choose the option with pick-up and drop-off in downtown Reykjavík — switch between the two with the toggle in the booking calendar.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between the self-drive and pick-up options?

They are the same snorkel. The self-drive option meets your guide at the Silfra car park in Þingvellir National Park and takes about 2½ hours; the pick-up option adds return transport from downtown Reykjavík and takes about 4½ hours in total. Choose between them with the toggle above the booking calendar.

Will I actually stay dry?

Yes — the drysuit seals at the neck and wrists, so only your face and hair touch the water. An insulating undersuit keeps you warm while you float.

Do I need diving experience?

No — no licence or previous snorkeling experience is required. You need to be able to swim and feel comfortable in water; your guide handles the rest.

Are the underwater photos really free?

Yes — your guide photographs you underwater during the tour and the photos are included in the price.
