Overview
Silfra is the only place on Earth where you can snorkel in the crack between two continents. The fissure at Þingvellir National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 50 km from Reykjavík — opens a little wider every year as the North American and Eurasian plates drift apart, and the glacial water filling it is so clear you can see up to 100 metres ahead.
This tour does it in a wetsuit — Adventure Vikings is the only operator in Iceland offering wetsuit snorkeling in Silfra. A wetsuit gives you far more freedom than the usual drysuit: instead of floating on the surface you can duck-dive down into the fissure and get closer to the canyon walls and the famous blues and greens. The water stays around 2–4°C all year, so it is a bracing swim — and most guests say it is more than worth it.
No diving licence or previous experience is needed. Your guide briefs you on shore, fits all the gear, and takes free underwater photos of you between the plates — and there is hot chocolate waiting when you climb out.
