Bolafjall Mountain and Viewing Platform

About Bolafjall Mountain and Viewing Platform

Bolafjall is a 638-meter mountain above Bolungarvík in the Westfjords, with a steel viewing platform hanging over its cliff edge. A summer-only mountain road climbs to the summit, so you can drive almost to the top and look straight down to the sea.

The view from Bolafjall takes in the mouth of Ísafjarðardjúp, the largest fjord in the Westfjords, and the flat-topped mountains on the far shore. On a clear evening the open Atlantic stretches north toward the Arctic Circle. When fog rolls in, which happens often, the cliffs drop into cloud and you may see nothing at all.

The platform opened on September 1, 2022. It is a 60-ton steel structure that juts out past the cliff edge, giving the sense of standing on air above the drop. The radar station beside it was built after 1985 and is run by the Icelandic Coast Guard.

To get to Bolafjall, take Route 630 out of Bolungarvík toward Skálavík and turn off for the summit at the top of the first climb. The road is steep gravel with sharp bends, and the drive from Bolungarvík takes about 20 minutes, or about 35 minutes from Ísafjörður. A regular car can make it in dry weather, but drive slowly and expect oncoming traffic on narrow sections.

The Bolafjall road is open to general traffic in summer only and closes once snow arrives. Opening dates change from year to year, so check the road conditions map and the forecast before you go, since a cloudy day at sea level can mean zero visibility at the top. Plan about an hour for the round trip and time on the platform.
