About Hofsós Swimming Pool

Hofsós Swimming Pool is an outdoor municipal pool in the village of Hofsós on the eastern shore of Skagafjörður, North Iceland. It opened in 2010 as a gift to the community from Steinunn Jónsdóttir and Lilja Pálmadóttir, and was designed by Basalt Architects. The building is set low into the slope below the main street, so the pool edge appears to run straight into the fjord.

The main pool measures 25 by 10.5 metres and is 0.8 to 1.8 metres deep, with water kept at about 30–31°C. The hot tub is around 38–39°C. From the water you look west across Skagafjörður to the island of Drangey and the mountains beyond, which is why the pool is often included on North Iceland road trips even though Hofsós is a village of only a few hundred people.

Hofsós lies on Route 76, about 37 km north of Sauðárkrókur and on the way to Siglufjörður and the Tröllaskagi peninsula. The village campsite is a short walk from the pool, and the Icelandic Emigration Centre and the basalt columns at Staðarbjargavík are also in the village. Sunset and clear evenings give the best light over the fjord.

According to the national pool directory, summer hours (1 June to 23 August) are 07:00–20:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 at weekends. From 24 August to 20 September it opens 07:00–20:00 on weekdays and 11:00–18:00 at weekends. In winter (21 September to 30 May) it opens 07:00–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 on weekdays and 11:00–16:00 at weekends. Check the pool's Facebook page for holiday changes.

The 2026 price for adults is 1,400 ISK, and 426 ISK for children aged 7–17, seniors and disabled visitors; children up to 6 swim free. Towels and swimsuits can be rented for 852 ISK each.
