About Earth Lagoon Mývatn

Mývatn Nature Baths, now renamed Earth Lagoon Mývatn, is a geothermal lagoon at Jarðbaðshólar near Lake Mývatn in North Iceland, about 89 km from Akureyri and 58 km from Húsavík. It has operated since 2004, and in summer 2026 it opened a new building with upgraded changing rooms and more space, so older descriptions and prices you find online may be out of date.

The water is drawn from boreholes up to 2,500 m deep, is alkaline and low in bacteria, and is kept at 36–40°C. Alongside the main lagoon there is a geothermal steam bath at around 45°C, continuing a centuries-old local tradition of steam bathing, plus a swim-up bar, massage treatments and the Earth Lagoon Bistro, which serves lunch and dinner, with a café for sandwiches.

The lagoon is open daily from 12:00 to 22:00, with seasonal variations, so check the hours before a winter visit. Tickets are sold in three tiers: Earth Essential, listed from 7,900 ISK; Earth Signature, from 9,900 ISK, with redesigned changing rooms; and Earth Exclusive, from 52,000 ISK, with private changing rooms, an exclusive lagoon area and a lounge with a fireplace. Prices vary by date and time, and children aged 5 and under enter free with an adult. Booking online in advance is the easiest way to secure a slot.

The lagoon sits a short drive from the main Mývatn sights: Námaskarð geothermal area is roughly 2 km away, and Grjótagjá cave and the Hverfjall crater are also close by, so it works well as the last stop of a day around the lake. The evening hours also make it a good place to wait for the northern lights in winter.
