Askja Caldera and Víti Crater 4x4 Tour from Akureyri or Lake Mývatn

  • Departures June – September
  • Operated by Imagine Iceland Travel

Overview

A ten-hour 4x4 tour from Akureyri or Lake Mývatn into the Icelandic highlands, to the Askja caldera and the Víti crater.

The drive crosses glacial rivers, mountains and lava fields with a guide, stopping at the Hrossaborg explosion crater, the Gljúfrasmiður waterfall, the flat-topped Herðubreið volcano and the Herðubreiðarlindir springs at its foot, and the Drekagil gully. Askja is a 50 km² caldera in the Dyngjufjöll mountains, formed when the roof of a magma chamber subsided during an eruption.

Swimming in the Víti crater is sometimes possible in summer, but not on every departure. The child fare applies from age 7, and no meals or refreshments are listed as part of the ticket.
