Overview
A helicopter tour from Skaftafell to the Lakagígar crater chain, 75 minutes in total, with one landing in the highlands near the craters.
About 55 of the 75 minutes are flight time. The route runs west from Skaftafell Terminal over Vatnajökull's southern outlet glaciers and across moss-covered lava fields to Lakagígar, a chain of craters running some 25 km across the highlands. The helicopter then sets down at a highland site near the crater system, with time to step out and take photographs before the return. Parking at the terminal is free and coffee or tea follows the flight.
Four passengers are needed for a departure; book with fewer and the operator will try to combine you with other guests, with a reschedule or a full refund if the flight does not fill. The landing site varies with conditions, and landings are made only when the pilot judges them safe. Transport to Skaftafell is not included; closed, sturdy shoes and warm layers are advised.
