About Camping Borðeyri

Camping Borðeyri is a small beachside campsite at the far end of Borðeyri, a tiny hamlet on the west shore of Hrútafjörður in Northwest Iceland. It is about as quiet as an Icelandic campsite gets: official figures put the population at 16 in 2018, and in the evening the only traffic is the tide.

Borðeyri is in Húnaþing vestra, a short detour off the Ring Road where it rounds the head of Hrútafjörður. From Reykjavík the drive takes a little over two hours, which makes the Borðeyri campsite a handy first night heading north or a stop on the way to the Westfjords.

Facilities are basic. A service house has toilets and a washing-up area with hot and cold water, and there are electrical hook-ups, barbecues and a children's playground. The municipality does not list showers, prices or opening dates, so call the caretaker on +354 849 7891 before you rely on them.

Before you leave, take half an hour to walk the old trading post, which is the main thing to do in Borðeyri. The village received its trading license in 1846 and grew into a busy seaport, shipping sheep to Britain until emigration to America emptied many farms. Among the oldest buildings is the restored Riis house from 1862. For a pool and a supermarket, Hvammstangi is about 35 minutes away by road.
